I keep reading the phrase Top Level Domain everywhere.

What does it actually mean?

I know the subdomain is the bit before the main part of the domain, i.e. before the first dot.

What about the Top Level Domain ... I'm presuming that's after the second dot right? so .com, .net whatever ...
