I think its hard to go with anything but a .com. its just so much easier to remember

honestly if you put in the effort any domain ending will work. If you own pinkelephants.net and you have lots of content, backlinks and seo, then you will appear above .com when people search for "pink elephants" in google.

If your SEO is good then any extension will work but if .com is available then go for it.
I will prefer country name extension if website is targeted towards a country.

It's depend on marketing target. For me, I prefer .Com because I use most of my domain names for affiliate marketing. Internatinal marketing target.
