Arrow [Beginner's Guide] - Why White Hats Should Target Micro Niches

Why White Hats Should Target Micro Niches

If you plan to stick to the rules, and practice "good" methods for online marketing I highly suggest staying out of broad niches and highly competitive markets. I'm going to briefly cover some of the key reasons that micro niches work, why they're better, why broader niches are unrealistic for a white hat w/ out a large amount of resources and some basic tips for finding a micro niche.

3 Reasons Micro Niches are The Way To Go For White Hat WM's:

      1. Low competition / Easy To Rank
      2. Profits are Achievable With Very Little Effort
      3. You Won't Need Black Hat Methods To Be Successful

3 Reasons Broad / Competitive Niches Are Unrealistic For You:

      1. You're competing with the big dogs, and you can't possibly allocate the type of resources that big SEO firms and corporate companies are.
      2. Over saturation always includes some dirty players, and if you're going to be the "good guy" then you're at an unfortunate disadvantage.
      3. No EMD's available in most cases, authority sites are more prevalent, and on page optimization + manually building backlinks is not going to help you when you're facing well established, aged domains with huge backlink profiles - not to mention the big players in these niches have established a huge following most of the time.

Now if you're not real familiar with a micro niche, to put it very simply, this is a extremely specific and targeted market. Finding a micro niche basically only requires breaking down a broader niche into smaller and smaller sub categories until you find what you're looking for. You can think of it as panning for gold - sift through all the dirt and rocks until you find those tiny gold nuggets and run with them. Typically these "gold nuggets" are going to have a lower search volume (use google keyword tool for basic research, along with any tools you consider to keep you in the 'white hat' category), but enough traffic to still profit from. I tend to target keywords around the 2,500 - 10,000 search volume range. The main thing to remember is that search volume is NOT an indicator of competition, and regardless of the amount of traffic you still need to analyze the competition, because any amount of traffic is worthless if you can't get it to your site - and ideally get it there organically.

How To Tell If You've Found a Good Micro Niche

      1. You've analyzed the competition - including backlink profiles of the top results for your keywords, domain history, etc, and you're confident you can compete with them.
      2. On top of the competition looking weak, you've found keywords with "buying intent" for your niche - and the competition remains weak for these phrases as well. You don't want to target things like "free xxx" and "xxx torrent", as the people typing these terms are simply not in a mindset to buy. Unless you're going for CPA or another monetization method that doesn't require your traffic to buy, then you are going to want to stick with "buying intent" types of keywords. These types of phrases include things like "for sale", "review" or even "cheap".
      3. There are exact match domains available for your keywords in .com, .net and .org. This is always a strong indicator that you won't have too much competition (not guaranteed but a good sign for sure).
